Crew Profiles:
Captain Glen Ballou, born and raised in Connecticut, has been racing and cruising in sailboats for over 50 years. He started sailing in Long Island Sound with his dad in their 10.5 foot homemade sailboat in weather the bigger boats were afraid to go out in. Dad would sail and Glen would bail. Glen did his first solo at the age of 11 and has been hooked on sailing ever since. When the other kids were swimming, Glen was sailing. He now has over 20,000 blue water miles delivering yachts ranging from a 30 foot fiberglass sailboat to a 130 foot, 1,000,000 pound converted steel fishing trawler. His deliveries were between New England, the Chesapeake Bay, Bermuda, the Virgin and Leeward Islands, and Florida. Glen holds a USCG 100 ton Master license for Steam, Motor or Auxiliary Sail Vessels, and a STCW95 license for vessels less than 200 tons.

After graduating from General Motors Institute with a degree in Engineering, Glen worked for the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Division, the Sikorsky Aircraft Division, and the corporate office of United Technologies Corporation for 35 years. At Pratt and Whitney, he designed electronic circuits for tape controlled machines, designed the emergency PA system for the 5,000,000 square foot complex, intercoms for the engine test cells, and was responsible for the guard force two way radio system. At the corporate office, he was responsible for all sound and audio-visual systems for the corporation and its divisions and designed and set up trade shows around the world. At Sikorsky Aircraft, Glen was director of the trade show program.

He is the author/editor of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th edition of the 1800 page Handbook for Sound Engineers, and has written many magazine articles on sound and acoustics. He also wrote the chapter “Capacitors and Inductors” in The Electrical Engineering Handbook.

First mate and cook extraordinaire, Debbie Ballou was born in North Carolina but grew up in Connecticut. She is always there to make you comfortable and feel at home. Debbie has been sailing for over 30 years.

Upon completing her education at Lasell College, Debbie joined the corporate office of United Technologies Corporation in the Technical Presentations and Orientation department. She was responsible for coordinating and shipping tradeshow material all over the world for the corporate office and all of its divisions. She then left after eight years to begin a family. In addition to being a mom, Debbie began her own bookkeeping business and helped Glen layout the four editions of the Handbook for Sound Engineers.

Debbie is a member of DIYC of Westbrook, CT. She was active in the racing program including all-ladies competition. She was the social chairman of Duck Island Yacht Club for five years, coordinating and cooking for all social events including all race parties. Because of her love of cooking and entertaining, she continues to work with the two top shoreline caterers in Connecticut during the summer months, serving many celebrities including the president of Yale University, Paul McCartney and Tony Blair. Debbie has acquired her ServeSafe license and privately caters numerous events, has taken many cooking classes and is active in gourmet groups.
