CREW PROFILES
Captain: James BensonNationality:
Number of Crew: 4
Crew Profiles:
CAPTAIN ROSS MURRAY, British, 34
Wherever you’d like to cruise, chances are Ross has sailed there. After graduating with a degree in geography from Hull University in 1993, Ross sailed all around the UK, the Baltic Sea, the Mediterranean – East and West, the Caribbean, Central America, the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes.

Ross has charter experience on sailing yachts up to 130 feet in length, including several Swans and the classic schooners Aschanti IV and Queen Nefertiti.   A keen racing sailor, he has competed in the Sydney to Hobart Race, the Nioulargue (now Les Voiles de St. Tropez), Antigua Race week and all the major Caribbean regattas.

From time to time Ross has lived on dry land, working for British Aerospace, a computer software company and on a game ranch in Zimbabwe. From September 2003 to July 2006, he captained a Swan during a three year circumnavigation starting in Newport, RI and finishing in Croatia via the Panama and Suez canals, cruising in the Pacific Islands, New Zealand, Indonesia, Thailand, India and the Red Sea.
Adding to the practical knowledge he has gained sailing tens of thousands of sea miles - including 10 transatlantic crossings, Captain Murray holds a Class IV (3,000 ton) License and MCA Certificate of Competence with Command Endorsement. He is certified in the following modules:
Navigation and Radar
GMDSS (radio)
Sea Survival
Fire Fighting
First Aid
Ship Captain's Medical
Ross has a private pilot's license and enjoys skiing, squash, tennis, rugby and wood carving.

Chef Jane McKen, British

Jane has been a keen sailor since she was very young.  By the age of twenty she was working as a freelance skipper on cruising and racing yachts around the Solent and south coast of England, and as a skipper/instructor for the British Offshore Sailing School in Spain and Portugal at twenty-one.

From that solid start she has filled almost every crew position on sailing yachts up to 198 feet in length - private, charter and racing.  She is a qualified skipper, First Mate, Stewardess, Cruising Instructor and Watch Leader.

Jane was First Mate on the 109’ VESPER for eighteen months, cruising the South Pacific, Caribbean and North America as well as cooking for the owners’ month-long trips with guests in the Caribbean.

Finding that she enjoyed the creativity of planning and preparing fine cuisine, Jane spent three months in 2004 taking several intensive cooking courses in Milan.  She was the chef on a 60 meter (198 foot) motor yacht based in Monaco for a year prior to joining KALIKOBASS II.

Enthusiastic and cheerful, Jane gives a hundred per cent and more to ensure that KALIKOBASS II’s guests enjoy every meal to the fullest.
Qualifications:
RYA Yacht Master Offshore
RYA Yacht Master Cruising Instructor
Very basic Italian & French

First Mate Tom de la Haye, British

Tom is from Jersey, one of the Channel Islands off the coast of France, where learning to sail is as natural as learning to walk  - and starts about the same age.  He has years of experience in every facet of caring for charter guests while ensuring their safety at all times.

Tom is an RYA qualified Senior Sailing Instructor and taught sailing for five years in England, Greece and Turkey.
While earning a diploma in Marine Studies at Falmouth Marine College, Tom learned silver service working in the four-star Falmouth Hotel in Cornwall.  He worked six winter seasons managing ski chalets in Val d’Isere, France for resort companies and private owners with responsibility for up to nine guests, including preparing breakfasts, afternoon teas and three course dinners daily.
A keen runner, Tom also enjoys skiing, cycling, surfing, wind surfing and wakeboarding.

His favorite sport is racing boats, from dinghies to Lulworth, a restored 1920 gaff-rigged cutter competing on the Mediterranean Classic Yacht Regatta Circuit, to the modern classic White Wings in Les Voiles d’Antibes.

Tom holds six RYA licenses, a current Seafarer Medical Certificate and is STCW95 certified.   His goal every day is to meet and surpass guests’ expectations with the highest standard of service.

Stewardess Kate Mandeno, New Zealander

Kate’s love of working outdoors and passion for working with people have led to a number of interesting – and sometimes challenging - jobs in the hospitality industry in far-flung places over the last six years.

She worked as an underwater videographer in the Cayman Islands filming clients interacting with stingrays, taking them scuba diving and filming their entire trip.   During the winter of 2005-2006 Kate escorted clients from around the world to back country lodges for an internationally known heli-skiing company.

She has been a waitress and sous chef  in upscale cafes and restaurants in Canadian and New Zealand resorts and as a server for a Monaco caterer.

Kate got her start in the chartering industry in June 2007 aboard a 66 foot motor yacht based in Barcelona.  Since that time she has been stewardess on motor and sailing yachts up to 32 meters (105 feet) in length in the Mediterranean.

Kate puts her full effort into everything she does and has great communication skills.  On all counts, she is a valuable addition to the KALIKOBASS II team.
